Sockapalooza – Finished

Sockapalooza Sock

Sockapalooza CuffYarn: Natural Dye Studio Sock Yarn in Lilac Sun
Pattern: Lacy Scallops (pdf)
Needles: 2.5mm DPNs.
Notes: My main alteration to this pattern was after the picot edging, I thought it looked a little bulky going straight from the joining row into the pattern, so I added an extra purl line (row 12 from the repeat). As well as stopping the bulkiness, I think it frames the lace. The lace part of this sock is very easy to knit. I had a few problems with heel, I didn’t really understand the pattern, I soon realized as long as you knitted the last stitch on each line and slipped alternative stitches you will get there.

Sockapalooza PouchI had quite a lot of yarn left over from this project and what does one do with leftover sock yarn?
You make a Lacy Scallops Pouch!

After row 8, I did an eyelet row and this continued in stocking stitch, until I ran out of wool. (I did leave a small amount to make a crochet chain cord). Unfortunately, the pouch is a little too small to hold the socks, but I think it will be perfect vessel to sent a little something extra to my pal.

Knitting Bags

Posted by Dee under General

With the summer approaching, it seem like an excellent idea to get out and about in this fair city and knit. So last night I arranged to go to iKnit London Wednesday Night, in Clapham.

Before leaving the house, I realised I am not really organised enough for knitting away from home. I tend to knit in the comfort for my four walls, when we go on holiday I don’t knit, when we dog sat last summer, I took a box with all my knitting supplies – not really an option when knitting in a pub. So, I put Hedera, some stitch markers and my Chibi in a ziploc bag thinking I would be alright.

After meeting up with Laura (and Ross), Alice and Emma we walked over to the pub, everything was going well we found a nice corner, got in some drinks and volia I said down to knit – but I in my stupidity I forgot to pack my fourth needle – there I was unable to knit! It still was a fun night – but I do feel extremely silly.

In an attempt to be more organised, I am going to get an knitting bag for knitting nights…of course I would love to get a Jordana Paige Bag, but maybe I should start smalled with a Go Knits Pouch but then what do I use to store my knitting notions. So inspired by Face Your Pockets website and and the "Whats in your Bag" flickr pool, I am encouraging bloggers to post there knitting bags online so I can get ideas of what I need in my knitting bag and don’t feel silly again!

Knit, People, Knit!

InvitesAs I made all the stationary for our wedding, I was asked by one of my new in-laws to make the invitations for a Christening. All my spare time has been taken up with these so, I haven’t been able to do any knitting.

However, last night I spent the perfect non knitting evening, in the company of the Gilmore Girls, adding my stash, projects and planned projects in to Ravelry. I still need to add some photos, but I think I have added all my recent projects, and am slowly getting there organising my stash. I have to say it was worth the wait! (Of course, I had to include a traditional screenshot of my page)

Ravelry

The Lacy Scallop socks are now blocked and ready to go – I am just making a little something extra for my pal, I will post both finished items over the weekned. I am planning a weekend of season two of the Gilmore Girls and a lot of knitting to make up for the lack of knitting this week.

Musings

Posted by Dee under General, Sockapalooza, Socks, Summer of Socks

The Sockapalooza Socks are finished, all the socks I have knitted to date have been plain, I have never had the need to block socks before as Alison pointed out lace socks look so much better blocked, so I returned to SnB Nation, found two wire coat hangers (thank goodness for the dry cleaners). and made some sock blockers (some photos tp follow).

heelMy attempt at knitting socks with two circular needles is coming along well, I managed to turn the heel and am decreasing for the toes. I opted to re-try a short row heel rather than heel flap, the stripes are smaller with this magic stripe yarn, than with Opal and I thought it might look silly with a larger stripes on the heel.

HeredaOf course, I can’t just have one pair of socks on the needles and this weekend, I cast on Hedera (my first attempt at a Cookie A pattern), I think these socks are going to be a breeze to knit, the pattern is easy to memorize (only four rows for a repeat), and it looks really affective.

ArchUnfortunately, we had an extremely busy weekend, and I was unable to do much knitting. On Sunday we joined the thousands of others under the arch to see Muse, strangely, we on Saturday we discovered several of our friends were going, so most of the early part of the gig was a series of text messages and hunting in bars for friends.

Knit Along Tuesday

Posted by Dee under General, Sockapalooza, Socks, Summer of Socks

Traditionally, Tuesday is meant to be Knit-Along Day, so I thought I would update with my progress on my sockapalooza socks. I finished my first sock over a fortnight ago and have just turned the heel on the second sock – all was going well, at least that was what I thought!

Sockapalooza ErrorI looked back at the first sock to calculate how many repeats of the pattern I needed to complete for the foot and I noticed an error on the in the repeat (in between the blue lines) I missed out rows 5 and 6, only making three eyelet rows not the four, I have in the other scallops.

Normally, I would let this slide but these socks are a gift and I wanted to create something truly special, so I am going to have to rip part of the first sock.

I know the summer of socks isn’t due to start for another few weeks, but the sunshine in London has prompted me to cast on yet more socks. Recently a few sock patterns I have been looking at, are written for two circular needles rather than double pointed needles, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to learn a new technique.

Two Needle SocksAlice recommended the tutorials on knittinghelp.com, so I had a quick look and I suddenly realised like knitting with DPN this looks more complicated than it is. I decided to experiment with the yarn I recently received in a swap – as it is self patterning it is really only suited to Stockinette socks, the yarn came with a pattern on the ball band so I hunted in my knitting supplies, I found two 3.25mm circular needles and cast on! After a few nights of great TV (24 finale, Prison Break and Heroes), I have knitted almost six inches of the leg.
