Update for January 2021

Currently Reading…

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo

girl, woman, other

☕☕☕☕☕
I was kindly sent a copy of this book over the summer. But my sister borrowed it (and then my mum) and so wasn’t until the end of last year that I started reading it. Girl, Woman, Other is a series of short interconnected stories about Black women in the UK. The unusual writing style makes it hard to read at first. However, once you get used to the style, it really is a five-star read. In which I couldn’t wait to spend time with the characters. Obviously, there were some characters I loved and others I hated! But it is a beautiful, clever masterpiece and it will be hard for any other book to top this read.

Bridgerton Novels 1-4 by Julia Quinn

Bridgerton

☕☕☕☕
Like most people, I became obsessed with the Bridgerton TV programme over the Christmas period. I toyed with reading the books and hosted a little poll on Instagram. A lot of people commented on how much they loved the books. And as the first three books were on a deal on Amazon, I ordered them. I read those books in within a fortnight! Then ordered the remaining books which I am continuing to read. Of the Bridgerton books I have read, each one follows well know tropes from the romance genre. The Duke and I is a fake romance story, and Viscount Who Loved Me is an Enemies to Lovers tale. An Offer from a Gentlemen is a re-telling of Cinderella. (complete with Ball and evil Stepmother.) And finally, Romancing Mr Bridgerton is a version of the friends to lovers’ trope.

Shuri: Wakanda Forever Nnedi Okorafor & Vita Ayala

Shuri

☕☕☕☕
When the Black Panther disappears whilst on a mission in space. It is up to his younger sister Princess Shuri to rescue him. With the help of Storm, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Then in the second story, Shuri take centre stage in New York, assisted by Ms Marvel and Miles Morales. Having not read the Black Panther comics, I didn’t know much about Shuri apart from her appearance in the movie. So, I love getting to know her and seeing her interact with some of my favourite characters from the Marvel comics. This trade paperback collects the ten issues from mini-series.

Currently Watching…

Lupin

☕☕☕☕☕
I mentioned Lupin in my 10 most-anticipated TV shows of 2020. We watched the first season over a few nights. Quickly becoming captivated in Assane Diop’s revenge plot. After discovering his father was framed for the thief of a diamond necklace. Diop sets to out to get vengeance for his father’s death from the family that framed him. Basing his crimes on those of a fictional gentlemen detective Arsène Lupin. This series has an exceptionally clever criminal and an equally clever detective. Leading to an amazing cat and mouse tale.

Bosch

☕☕☕☕
We watched the first few seasons of Bosch when they aired but somehow ended up falling behind. Now seemed like the ideal time to catch up. Based on the Michael Connelly novels, the series follows detective Harry Bosch working for the serious crime’s unit in the LAPD. Haunted by the death of his mother, trying to build a relationship with his teenaged daughter, all whilst trying to solve murders in Los Angeles.

It’s A Sin

☕☕☕☕☕
Another show I mentioned in my 10 most anticipated show post, was It’s a Sin. The programme follows Ritchie when he moved to London in the 1980s with dreams of becoming an actor. He quickly finds a group of friends, and they move in together. Soon their world is rocked by the outbreak of HIV and their lives are changed forever. I intended to binge-watch this programme, but the truth is, it was too emotional. And I could only watch an episode a night!

Currently Knitting…

In the first lockdown, I started making mini hats for the Innocent Smoothies Big Knit campaign. Unfortunately, they didn’t run the campaign last year and so I stopped in the summer. But, they are planning on running on starting up again next January. So, I thought I would try to knit a mini hat a week this year. At the moment they seem to have a fruity theme!
