Review Of The Year

2017 REVIEW OF THE YEAR

I had intended my final post of 2017 to be a “Review of the Year!” However, due to illness, it will be my first post of 2018. These are the questions I devised in 2016, with updated answers for 2017. Like before if you want to join in, feel free to use the graphic above and I look forward to seeing your answers.

Highlights – What one great thing happened to you this year.
At the start of the year, I attended the Women’s March in London. I went with a dear friend, we had a chance to chat and laugh whilst we walked for an amazing cause. I adored the March for several reasons, women (and some men) joining in together. the amazing signs (so many Princess Leia themed signs) and the knitter in me loved seeing the sea of pink pussy-hats. Finally, seeing a Wonder Woman movie on the big screen! At the end of the year, the midnight showing of The Last Jedi and I finally got to see Hamilton.

Surprise – either TV show, film, game etc. that impressed you the most.
Kimi no Na Wa (Your Name) I first heard about the movie at the beginning of the year but missed the UK release date. So I had to wait for the digital release to watch it. I was not disappointed, the movie itself is visually gorgeous, plus it has a beautiful storyline.

New Fandom – Did you gain a new obsession in 2017?
I guess this is an extension of an existing fandom! After seeing The Last Jedi, I have joined the dark side and am now ‘Reylo’ Trash!

The Comeback Kid – Was one of your fandoms rebooted, re-released, or re-imagined.
This has to be Twin Peaks: The Return, I loved the show 20 years ago and the newest season was as quirky, surreal and funny as before. As with the earlier seasons, the soundtrack is also amazing.

Still going strong? – did one TV show have an amazing season? Or did a book series have a truly impressive release this year?
Last year, I said Game of Thrones, as season six was epic. As expected season seven was extraordinary. I was also impressed with the second season of Stranger Things.

Biggest disappointment of the Year.
Non-geeky related, it was Jury Service. I have always wanted to be called for Jury Service, and in hindsight, it was two weeks of sitting around in various beige rooms and drinking bad coffee.

Event of the year – convention, viewing party, geek girl brunch etc.
For personal reasons this year was very quiet for me. I didn’t go to any conventions. Over the summer, I visited a few geeky exhibits in London (Star Wars Identities and The Art of Brick). At the end of the year, I had so much fun attending the midnight screening of The Last Jedi in Leicester Square which was introduced by Rian Johnson himself.

What are you looking forward to next year?
So many movies, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Hopefully, having a mini vacation in the spring.

Quick Fire Round

Movie of the Year: Wonder Woman
Game of the Year: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Favourite Bookstagrammers

Between the Pages Last month, I noticed several of my favourite geeky bloggers were all writing about Disney. I discovered it wasn’t a coincidence, these bloggers were all taking part in the Geek Blogs Unite theme. Which for March was the Happiest Place on Earth.

This months theme is “Between The Pages”. You can read more about Geek Blogs Unite on their blog or via the Facebook Group. With quite a wide scope to talk about, rather than write about my favourite book, or what I am now reading. Instead I thought I would focus once again on Bookstagram.

Bookstagram is a sub-community on social media, mainly on Instagram, to showcase, books and reading. The instagrammers, use props like candles, flowers or memorabilia, together with a books. Combining photography and books, bookstagram has blow up on social media. People use props or  interesting locations and to show off books on Instagram. Since I wrote about it last year, a new social media app, Litsy has started which combines bookstagrams and book reviews.

My Five Favourite Bookstagrammers
  1. Reading a books whilst enjoying a cup of coffee is the perfect combination. Bookbaristas is one of the most popular bookstagrammers, she highlights amazing coffee shops and cafe in New York City, with a mini book review included.

  2. dropandgivemenerdy creates beautiful themed flatlays, most noteworthy are the recent coloured flatlays. She is also a Brand Rep for LitJoy Crate and Charm with Me, so is a great account to follow to see unboxing photos for these subscription boxes.

  3. depepi is the queen of Funko Friday. She fills her instagram feed with cute photos Funko figures. However, she has recently started a #booksandpops series, every photos pairs a book with a figure.

  4. I love a_bookish_shelf‘s photos as she used classic bookstagram shots of some of my favourite compositions types, like #bookandcandle, #socksunday and #bookishrainbow which can all be seen on her feed.

  5. jordandenenyc is best known for original geek chic clothing, and she used her instagram to highlight her range. But she also is taking part in the 100 cups of coffee challenge on Instagram, only she posts her coffees with books.

Review of the Year

2016 REVIEW OF THE YEAR

I have put together a little Review Of The Year Blog Tag. Just a few questions to talk about some of the highs and a low of 2016. Feel free to join in and use the graphic. I look forward to reading your answers.

Highlight – What one great thing happened to you this year.
Losing so many icons this year, has been truly awful. It’s hard to think of highlights. But I did have a few. Finally, visiting Barcelona in March, Star Wars Celebrations in July and attending the Fan Screening of Doctor Strange in October.

Surprise – Be it TV show, film, game etc. that impressed you the most.
This answer is the little odd for me, for the majority of the year it’s been Stranger Things. But last week I watched The OA. Beforehand, I knew nothing about this show, hadn’t read any reviews, didn’t know about the cast etc. I just saw a tweet that claimed it was the new Stranger Things. Within two days I went from never hearing of the show to full on obsession.

New Fandom – Did you gain a new obsession in 2016?
So I am a little late to the game with this one, but Hamilton has become my latest obsession! I am hoping to get tickets to see the West End production of the show next year.

The Comeback Kid – Was one of your fandoms rebooted, re-released, or re-imagined.
I guess Gilmore Girls. I did have some objections with the show (I hope to write about it soon). But it was so lovely to visit Stars Hallow once again.

Still going strong? – did one TV show have an amazing season. Or did a book series have a truly impressive release this year.
Game of Thrones! I was a little concerned about season six as it was the first season that didn’t use the books as a guide. However, the season extremely impressed me (especially with the Battle of the Bastards episode).

Biggest disappointment of the Year.
The Killing Joke movie. I wrote about my disappointment of the movie adaption. I had really been looking forward to this movie. I arranged to go to the special screening in our local cinema and left feeling upset and disappointed.

Event of the year – be it a convention, viewing party, geek girl brunch etc.
Star Wars Celebrations! I reviewed my experiences here.

What are you looking forward to next year.
I guess it will start with new episodes of Sherlock in January.
Our 10 year wedding anniversary in March.
Films I am looking forward to including Lego Movie: Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Wars 9!

Quick Fire Round

TV Show of the Year: Stranger Things
Movie of the Year: Rogue One
Game of the Year: Pokémon Go
Book of the Year: The Good Immigrant (non-fiction) and Rebels of the Sands (fiction)
Album of the Year:  The Hamilton Mixtape

A Merry Fictional Blog Challenge!

A Merry Christmas BLog Challenge

Katy at Oh So Geeky has put together this fun Merry Fictional Blog Challenge, to spread some Christmas cheer online. It’s not too late to join in you can get all the details on her blog.

Advent Calendar: Traditions you celebrate during December?
Our traditions start over the first weekend of December, my in-laws have a tree trimming party. Most of the extended family come over. This marks the start of the holiday season for us. The rest of our traditions are pretty boring, I always put together a Christmas Eve Box, we have a movie night at home with cocktails.

When my dad was alive we would go to the cinema on Boxing Day. When the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies were released we saw them or the most recent Bond movie. Last year, my mum, sister and I went to see The Force Awakens and this year we will be seeing Rogue One. So I guess watching Star Wars on Boxing Day will become a new tradition.

Carols: What’s your favourite song(s)?
“Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses
“Fairytale in New York” by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl

Coal: A naughty character you’d send coal to?
Kylo Ren – he can add the coal to that Darth Vadar shrine.

Fireplace: Favourite Christmas movie that melts your heart?
Love Actually. But I love any variation of A Christmas Carol, especially the Muppet’s version!

via GIPHY

Gingerbread: What’s your favourite holiday snack?
Mince Pies!

Hot Cocoa: What’s your favourite drink?
Gingerbread Lattes!

Mistletoe: Character you’d like to meet under the mistletoe?
Sherlock

Mittens: A cozy outfit that keeps you warm during winter?
I love wearing hats in this weather, oh and my comfy boots.

Naughty: Three characters who’d make the Naughty list.
Littlefinger from Game of Thrones
Neagen from The Walking Dead
The Joker

Nice: Three characters who’d make the Nice list.
Jyn Erso from Star Wars: Rogue One
Eleven from Stranger Things
All the Stark children from Game of Thrones

via GIPHY

North Pole: If you could spend Christmas anywhere (even fictional), where would you go?
I would love to spend Christmas on the beach or even in Las Vegas!

Presents: A book or movie on your wishlist?
The Brotherhood Trilogy (Noel Clarke’s films) and The Harry Potter Illustrated Editions.

Rudolph: What’s your favourite TV holiday special?
It would have to be Doctor Who. Maybe Voyage of the Dammed or A Christmas Carol.

Santa: A character you’d love to exchange presents with? What would you get them
Batgirl! I would buy her a funky phone cover, or some decals for her laptop.

Scrooge: A villain you’d help see life in a different way?
Darth Vader

Snowflake: Something that makes you feel special.
Being with my friends and family, or just getting messages from them over the Holiday period.

Tree: What do you decorate your house with for the season?
Our family room is decorated quite traditionally, with a tree and a garland over the mantel. In our bedroom we have a Star Wars theme!

Yuletide: The top 3 things in your life that make you the most happy?
My husband, my mum and my sister.

BONUS: Ugly Christmas Sweater: Would you wear a sweater Molly Weasley made you or avoid it like the plague?
As a knitter, I like to think I will become the type of mum like Molly Weasley. That knits ugly jumpers for my children.

Pokemon Go Book Tag

pokemon-go-book-tag
Read at Midnight’s Pokémon Go Book Tag was all the rage over the summer. Combining bloggers love of the game and reading. As I am so behind on my blogging, I am fashionable late at completing this tag.

pokemon-tag-01starters
For my starter Pokémon in Pokémon Go I picked a Charmander as I loved his character in the TV show. Especially when he went through his moody teenage Charmeleon phase.
As for the book that started my love of reading, I adored the Meg & Mog or Amelia Bedelia when I was extremely young, but the series I adored reading were either the Judy Blume books or those by S.E. Hinton, especially The Outsiders.

pokemon-tag02pikachu
I still don’t have a Pikachu! I keep hoping to find one in a 2KM egg but even those are getting harder to find. I think I spotted on the radar last week, when we were in Hyde Park but have no luck finding him in the vast area.
The classic book I love to re-read is The Great Gatsbythis book is both a love story and insight into New York during prohibition.

pokemon-tag-03-zubatAs a Londoner, I was tempted to change this from Zubats to Drowzees, they are everywhere in the city!
Years ago it seemed every single woman was reading The Bridget Jones Diary. They were all claiming they are just like Bridget Jones. I tried to read the book and found the character was rather annoying. In the following years I had to put up with a sequel and the movies. Now yet again Bridget Jones is everywhere and still annoying me!

pokemon-tag-04-dittoHas anyone caught I Ditto yet? I have read several possible theories on how to catch one online. But it looks like these Pokémon have not yet been released in the game.
I do love the I Heart… series, I know they are just are cheesy, and a little predictable. But I love the mixed to comedy and name dropping of places in different cities.

pokemon-tag-05-snorlaxIf I had the space I would love to buy this Snorlax Bean Bag, it would be prefer to use when I read.
I guess the series I would love to read if I had the time would be the Discworld books. I read one book from the series a few years ago, but they are so many more to read. Plus I would have no idea what order to read them in!

pokemon-tag06-gengarWhen I started playing this game I seemed to find several Gastly each day. Since then they have disappeared so I am yet to evolved my Haunter to a Gengar.
I tend not to read scary books, horror is my least favourite genre. However, several books have kept me up all night reading, the most recent one being Harry Potter and The Cursed Child.

pokemon-tag07-nidokingqueenNidoran♀ was the first Pokémon I went hunting for after spotting the outline on the radar. Since then I have yet to find another one. So my poor Nidorino is missing his mate.
The obvious answer for me to this question is Babs & Dick, but they are in comics. Do graphic novels count towards this book tag? I am assuming they do!

pokemon-tag08-rapidashImage if they allowed you to ride your Pokemon in the game if you selected it as your buddy. I would love to ride my Ponyta.
One book I love for several reasons is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is also one of my favourite movies, although the ending to the movie is completely different.

pokemon-tag09-eeveeEevee is still one of my favourite Pokémon and I am still hoping to catch a few more so I can have a Jolteon to complete my Eevee set.
I love that J.K. Rowling et al wrote another Harry Potter book, but I am not sure where else this series can go. For a long time the Star Wars Expanded Universe books were my only hope of seeing the further adventures of the Skywalker family, so I will always love seeing a Star Wars spin-off series.

pokemon-tag14-magikarp

We are lucky to live within walking distance of the River Thames and so our Pokewalks involve catching several Magikarp a day – perfect for trying to get those 400 candies.
The series that I found awesome also centres around the River Thames. I originally started reading Rivers of London as it was an urban fantasy set it London. But quickly, began to adore the characters and I love that I recognise so many places from the books.

pokemon-tag12-legendary

I am hoping they don’t rush introducing the legendary Pokemon as this will mark the end of the game, plus my Pokedex is far from being complete.
Social media seems to overhype several book series at the moment, the ones I am looking forward to reading at The Red Queen books.

pokemon-tag15mew-mewtwo

Of course the legendary Pokemon I would love to own is a Mewtoo. Like this Pokemon the collector’s edition I am coveting is the Harry Potter Illustrated Edition. I wish they would hurry up and publish the complete set.

pokemon-tag10-eggAll I seem to be getting at the moment is 5KM eggs and they contain duds – if I hatch one more Meowth or Slowpoke!
I never seem to be in loop about new novels, I always discover books months after everyone else. So I have no idea about this question.

pokemon-tag11-lure-module
One great thing about London is the go to Pokemon Go hangouts – which always have several lures going. It’s amazing to see dozens of people playing the game all getting excited when an interesting Pokemon appears in the game.
I used to have several auto-buy authors but in recent years this list as slimmed down, now I guess I auto-buy series like Star Wars or any graphic novel that features Batgirl.

pokemon-tag13-server-down
Do you remember the early days of Pokemon Go when we would always see the server down screen. Now I have to put up with pidgey running away.
Obviously, the book I am eagerly waiting for is The Winds of Winter!

The Pokemon Go Book Tag was the brainchild of Read at Midnight, and the images included in the post at her’s.

Five Questions about Fandoms

Five Questions about Fandoms

Every week Kayla from Epicfied hosts a Fandom Friday Q&A about a specific fandom and asks readers submit their answers. Last week, it was five general questions about fandoms, so I thought I would turn my answers into a blog post – so you could get to know the fandoms I love (You can read their answers here).

  1. What are your top five fandoms?
    • Star Wars
    • Game of Thrones
    • Marvel Cinematic Universe
    • Batgirl
    • Sherlock
  2. What is a fandom you love but isn’t extremely popular?

    via GIPHY

I am going to have to say Orphan Black, I love this show and became hooked from the first season however, no one I know seemed to watch it, so that’s why I adding it here.

  3. What is a fandom you highly recommend?
Too many to mention, I spent a few years convincing all my friends to watch Game of Thrones just so I could discuss each episode, spoilers and theories.

Ned's Sword Ice and Arya's needle "Stick 'em with the pointy end!"
Ice & Needle at the Game of Thrones Exhibit

I know a lot of people have read the New 52 Batgirl, but I prefer the pre-Flashpoint version, with Barbara Gordon as Oracle and Cassandra Cain as Batgirl, so I guess I would recommend reading Batgirl: Silent Knight or Birds of Prey: Vol 1.

  4. Do you collect anything?
My largest collection is Star Wars based, in the attic I have a lot of merchandise from the 1990’s, Episode One Lego sets, board games and dozens of Expanded Universe books.

    Tsum Tsum
A few of my favourite tsum tsum

Last year, I brought a few Tsum Tsum, this year as they released two Star Wars waves and a Civil War set, I seem to have developed a larger collection, with the Finding Dory and The Force Awaken sets being released this month, I think my collection will continue to grow.

  5. Anything else?
Like many I am still not over the fact the Firefly got cancelled!
