Review: The Good Immigrant

October 27, 2016September 9, 2020 Dee

I brought The Good Immigrant after reading an article published by Riz Ahmed in The Guardian newspaper. His article is one of 21 essays by Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority (BAME) immigrants about their experiences in living in Britain. Of the books I have read in recent years … Continue reading Review: The Good Immigrant

(A bit late I guess). M&S Hot Cross Bun Yumnut. (A bit late I guess).
M&S Hot Cross Bun Yumnut.

M&S Yum-nut

M&S’s take of a cronut.
Flaked doughnut topped with spiced fondant and cross decoration to give the appearance of a hot cross bun. The fondant isn’t too thick sickly and contains the spices (there’s a definite taste of cinnamon).
The whole doughnut tastes like a hot cross bun without the dried fruit.

Happy Easter. Happy Easter.
Seems odd that only a few days ago we had gorgeous Seems odd that only a few days ago we had gorgeous weather perfect for taking great photos of the spring blossom.
Let’s hope it doesn’t snow over the weekend.
Accidentally over the lockdown doughnuts became ou Accidentally over the lockdown doughnuts became our weekly treat. It started during the first lockdown when we got the Crosstown collective boxes which included a selection of their doughnuts. Since then we have tried all kinds of interesting doughnuts. So I figured I would start writing mini doughnut reviews!

First up the doughnut that started the lockdown treats a Crosstown Homemade Jam Doughnut.
Their classic sourdough doughnut filled with raspberry jam.
A must try for all fans of traditional jam doughnuts.

You might think this is just another throwback pho You might think this is just another throwback photo from some Star Wars exhibit that I have been to. But it’s actually from the Kimono to Catwalk exhibit from the V&A museum. An exhibit that examined how
kimono aren’t just part of Japanese culture but are an important part of all design, fashion and culture today.

Inspired by @lefancygeek’s recent post. I wanted to post this photo of Obi-Wan’s costume (and the Queen’s outfit) as it is the perfect remind that East and South East Asian (ESEA) culture is Pop Culture. And It’s not just K-Pop and Anime. Modern movies including Star Wars are inspired by Kurosawa’s movies. TV programmes take inspiration from ESEA culture like GBBO having a Japanese week. Or The Masked Singer (which is based on a Korean TV show).

As you must have seen in social media the ESEA community is facing an increased level of violence at the moment. I say social media as I feel that the UK media aren’t covering this story enough. Whilst I’m assuming we are all aware of the attack in Atlanta. There have been attacks in the UK and even vandalism of restaurants here in London’s Chinatown, which we are not talking about.

We drink Taiwanese Bubble Tea.
Order Chinese or Thai takeaways.
Play Japanese video games.
Get our nails done in Vietnamese nail parlours.
Use Korean beauty products and love all things Kawaii.

It seems we are happy to enjoy all the joy of ESEA culture but we are not willing to point out when they are suffering. We need to do more to stand with ESEA community.

To all my ESEA friends (and AAPI friends in America) Thank you for sharing your stories.
I see you. I’m listening. And I will stand with you.
(If you made it this far thank you for reading this). #stopasianhate
