Review of the Year 2021

So once again, I am writing my review of the year in the middle of January! My reasoning is pretty much the same as last year. I didn’t plan on writing this post as nothing really major happened in 2021. However, I think it is fun to look back, so in the end, I wrote this post a few weeks late!

Review of the Year 2021

Highlight – What one great thing happened to you this year.

This is a tough one. For the majority of the year, we were still at “staying at home.” But life did slowly start getting back to like it was pre-pandemic. For me, this meant seeing movies in the cinema, meeting up with friends, and even attending MCM London. However, all of this was possible because I had my vaccine! I am lucky enough to live in a country where I had my Covid-19 vaccine and even a booster in 2021. So my highlight of the year in getting vaccinated!

Surprise – Be it a TV show, film, or game that impressed you the most.

WandaVision! Literally, at the start of 2021, Marvel Studios presented us with a phenomenal TV show. I am not sure what I was expecting from WandaVision, but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. To be honest, all of the Marvel TV shows last year were amazing! Each one had its merits and made me love it.

New Fandom – Did you gain a new obsession in 2021?

Bridgerton. Technically, I first watched the TV show in 2020. However, in 2021 I read all the Julia Quinn books and re-watched the show. For the first few months of 2021, I was absorbed in the lives of the Bridgerton clan.

The Comeback Kid – Was one of your fandoms rebooted, re-released, or re-imagined.

Animal Crossing: New Horizon. This was the same answer for this question in last year’s round-up. But I think the game deserves to be added again this year. Mainly because of the update in the Autumn. Personally, I did get a little bored of the game last year. So I re-started my island in the early Summer. Once again loved terraforming my island and hunting for all the fossils. The 2.0 update provided new gameplay and helped revive a tired game.

Still, going strong? – did one TV show have an amazing season? Or did a book series have a truly impressive release this year?

For this, it has to be the whole of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As I said, the Marvel shows began the year on a high with WandaVision on Disney+. But over the next twelve months, they have continued to strive on both the small and big screen. After having no new content in 2020, Marvel delivered five original TV shows and four movies. Proving that the franchise is still going strong.

Biggest disappointment of the Year.

Wonder Woman 1984 (I think technically this movie was released in 2020, but I saw it in 2021). I loved the first Wonder Woman movie and was excited about the sequel. Of course, I had some concerns, especially after the Justice League movie. But having Patty Jenkins directing the sequel, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I felt the magic of the first movie didn’t carry over to the second one.

Event of the year – be it a convention, viewing party, geek girl brunch etc.

The only geeky event I attended in 2021 was MCM London, so I guess that is my answer by default. But to be honest, it was nice being back at a convention, meeting up with friends and doing a lot of shopping!

What are you looking forward to next year?

So many movies! The New Batman movie. As well as the latest Marvel movies from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. Likewise, there are many TV shows to look forward to this year.

On a personal level, we still don’t feel comfortable travelling too far from home, so I doubt we will travel abroad this year. However, I would like to do a few mini-breaks to explore!

Quickfire Round

Movie of the Year: Spider-Man: No Way Home
