100 Cups of Coffee

Cold Brew & Bake OffSeptember means the new autumn television schedule and an important part of that use to be The Great British Bake Off. To mark the start of the seventh series, and continuing our little tradition. We popped to our favourite bakery, The Outsider Tart to buy cake for our viewing party.

For the first time this year Starbucks released Pumpkin Spiced Lattes at the beginning of September, instead of the end of the month. The release of the drink happened to coincided with one of the hottest weeks of the summer. So I took the chance to try a Pumpkin Spiced Frappacino. I was not convinced by this cold version of my favourite drink.

With the British weather being as unpredictable as it is. A few days later we had grey and rainy skies. This was the perfect weather for an autumnal walk along the river whilst drinking a Pumpkin Spiced Latte.Spanish Coffee

When I went to visit Jason in Gibraltar, we would visit a cute café around the back of his apartment for breakfast. It was on the corner of the mini square, and the ideal spot to people watch whilst eating. It also seemed right to have this photo in black and white, for that artistic European feel. Same Coffee
The next stop on Jason’s overseas working tour was the Philippines. Next door to his apartment here was a Starbucks. So every afternoon, just like at home I would pop downstairs for my afternoon pick me up. They didn’t serve PSL here, but did have traditional lattes and had an amazing range of teas.

Coffee & Queuing

When I wrote about my experiences at Star Wars Celebrations, I mentioned how our adventures involved a lot of early starts and plenty of queuing. As a result most mornings started with a cup of coffee from the local coffee shop in the exhibition hall.

Over the summer Jason and I became obsessed with Pokémon Go. Our local park had several Pokémon Go play-days, where they set off lures at each Poké-Stops, hoping to catch some rare Pokémon, we attended one of the play-days. Instead we caught 17 Drowzee as well as the normal Pidgey and Rattatas.

Coffee & Waiting

I’m not really keen on Costa Coffee, it’s not that they make bad coffee – in fact they sell gingerbread lattes all year around which isn’t bad in my book. It is just seems I only go to there at awkward times, they have branches in hospitals, service stations or airports . As a result I associate Costa Coffee with queuing or waiting!

Houghton Hall

Another adventure of ours over the summer was our trip to Norfolk. Whilst at Houghton Hall as well as admiring all the artwork, we stopped at the amazing coffee shop – in the former stables. For a cake and coffee pit stop.

Team GB
Team GB pride

My final obsession over the summer was the Rio Olympics. I’m not usually a huge sports fan, but there is something about the large scale of the Olympics that I love! I dug out my Team GB t-shirt and Links of London bracelet from London 2012.

Coffee on the Go
Living and working in London, we don’t need a car in our everyday lives. Instead we rely on a car sharing service and occasionally hire cars for weekend adventures. Normally, we have to pick up our rental cars at the airport. So nowadays all mini holidays for us start riding travelators in the airport.

New Coffee Shop
One of the reasons I started this challenge was to explore the city more and try new coffee shops. Over the last year, whilst doing this challenge I’ve put together a large list of coffee shops to visit. But occasionally, I discover a little gem on my own, like this café near to Jason’s barbers.

Afternoon Off
This spring once again I became obsessed with Game of Thrones, as well as watching the sixth season, I also re-watched seasons one to five on Blu-ray. So most of my free-time was spend knitting, binge watching and drinking coffee.

Breakfast Meeting
If I ever have to have a morning meeting, I love to schedule it in Pret a Manage, as they have stores located all over the city, serve great coffee and have the most amazing almond croissants in London.

Big Day!

Before Star Wars Celebrations, they was a lot of confusion online regarding when and where to pick up your passes and the wristbands for the panels. Rather than risk the queue in the morning I picked up our passes the day before. (You can read all about my adventures at Star Wars Celebrations here.)

100 Cups of Coffee

Once again, I am behind at writing my coffee drinking adventures, as part of my 100 cups of coffee project. Most of these coffees are from the spring.

Monmouth Coffee
On a rare occasion in early May, Jason and I had a weekend meeting in near London Bridge. This was the perfect chance to visit Borough Market and do a little shopping. No trip to the market is complete without a visit to Monmouth Coffee!

Another attempt of Spring
I have mentioned before that I love the @breakfastlondon instagram account, and use it for recommendations for new brunch spots. As Ling and I hadn’t met up of a while we thought we would try one of these places and have a fabulous spring brunch on the terrace of Urban Pantry.

Coffee & Cake
May (along with November) is Birthday month in our family. As much as I love buying presents for my family, I also find it stressful, so I tend to treat myself during a successful shop, to a break and cake!

Rebellious Coffee

When I was reading Rebel in the Sands, I was looking at photos of the book on Instagram, and I noticed a lot to mentions of Artisan Coffee Shop. This is one of my favourite coffee spots, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover the book was part written in the shop.
Coffee & Champagne

Finally, at the end of May to celebrate my sister’s birthday (and my successful present buying skills). We went for lunch at Valentina’s. Our favourite Italian restaurant have a bottomless lunch on Sundays, after drinking several glasses of prosecco I needed a coffee!

100 Cups of Coffee

As I mentioned before, my sister and I had a little staycation in London. Which we used as an opportunity to check out some of our favourite neighbourhood. It was also a chance for us to re-visited some old haunts like Ealing.  We discovered our old favourite café had shut but did find a new cozy coffee shop.

For the first time in a few years I went to a knitting group. I meet up with Ling before hand, and we raided her shop for some pretty yarn. Once at knitting group, I was so excited to catch up with friends and actually knit, I forgot to take a photo. So the next morning I took a “catch-up” photo.

Pinball & Coffee
Time Out London recently published an amazing list of coffee shops (and what speciality coffee to order from each store). When reading the magazine, It was pleasing to see a few coffee shops in our local area for me to add to my list. First was Chief Coffee, a cool space with pinball machines in the basement. My favourite game was of course the Game of Thrones pinball machine.

Instagram Brunch

My favourite food to order brunch is avocado toast, ideally with a poached egg! I love trying variations of this simple meal – adding houmous, fresh tomatoes or even sweet chilli sauce. For me the perfect pairing for avocado toast is latte.

May was birthday month and this meant a lot of eating out! I love having a coffee after my meal, often as an alternative to dessert but some times to go with my pudding. One of my favourite coffees was a Vietnamese iced coffee at Foxlow. This twist on a traditional Vietnamese coffee is made with cold brew, poured over the condensed milk all served over ice.

Cold Brew
During the summer in the afternoon, I like to switch my coffee for a frappé or ice coffee, in recent years this has become a cold brew. Starbucks have started selling their version in the U.K. it is an interesting healthier addition to the summer menu. Especially as I’m trying to cut down my sugar consumption.

Marble Table
Over the last few months I have loved toying with my camera, I have brought several books and have read about composition and trends. Since then I have taken a lot of cliché photographs, my feet on patterned floors, manicured nails holding a nail varnish bottle and cups of coffee on a marble table #latteart.

Spring Coffee
Adding to this I have become one of those people who grab my camera when the sun comes out to take a few photos. We are lucky enough to have a large park and river walk near our house. Which seem to be my go to place to experiment with setting on my camera but also explore the different coffee stores.

Tsum Tsum & Coffee
Recently, I have started collecting tsum tsum, after nearly missing out on a complete Star Wars set, I popped down to the mall on “Tsum Tsum Tuesday” when the “Episode One” collection was released. The Jar Jar version had already sold out at lunchtime but I managed to get all the ones I wanted including the Queen Amidala.

Coffee & Cake
My sister and I planned a mini staycation in April. We used this opportunity to explore some of our favourite neighbourhoods in London, do some shopping, and checking out some local cafés for coffee and cake!

Mother's Day Coffee
For Mother’s Day at the beginning of March we had a lovely Sunday Roast in our local pub. The pub put on a special menu so and treated the mothers to prosecco and mini posies of flowers. What added to my mother’s day was the pub serving her favourite dessert an affogato (hot coffee poured over vanilla gelato),

On the Go
The following weekend, we arranged to celebrate a belated Mother’s Day with Jason’s mum. Since they moved further away from London, we have started meeting mid-way – which happens to be Cambridge. After an early start we hopped on the train with armed with coffee to being our adventure.

Happy Mail
I love writing letters, but recently have fallen behind. Determined to catch up on some correspondence and send out some important birthday cards before the day, I popped to my favourite coffee shop, armed with happy mail supplies to catch up.

Rose Latte
I follow a lot of curated accounts on Instagram, like @breakfastlondon, and @londoncoffeeshops. I kept noticing the same drink popping up – a Rose Latte from Farm Girl. I suggested to my sister we pop there for girly brunch on Saturday and discovered a long queue of people who obviously all had the same idea! After a short wait we had a lovely brunch and the prettiest coffee I’ve seen.

After our brunch we continued our girly day, with some retail therapy. After walking around Notting Hill and some extensive shopping on Oxford Street, we stopped for a tea time coffee and refuelling. This was the first time I posted two coffees in a day!

100 Cups of Coffee
I’m extremely behind writing up about my 100 cups of coffee project, most of these coffees were from the start of the year.

In January, we had no internet connection in our house for a few days, I know we used wi-fi a lot, this was a real wake up call – luckily we have a mobile wi-fi for traveling which came in handy. As for work, I created a mobile office in a local pub – they have massive empty tables ideal to spread out your work and it was quieter than the coffee shop.

Like most people I was struck down the a flu-like virus earlier this year, which affected my taste buds, one of the side effect was me hating the taste of coffee! As a result, this project became impossible, as soon as my taste buds were back to normal, I popped to my favourite coffee shop for a pick me up!

One of our local restaurants ran a fund-raising promotion on Pancake Day, a special pancake breakfast, with all the money going to Magic Breakfast (an amazing charity that gives free breakfast to school children), Getting to eat pancakes and helping out a charity was a no-brainer for me, if I have my way, I would have eaten pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Shrove Tuesday – but we settled for just brunch!

I had plans to photograph several cups on vacation in Barcelona, starting with a coffee on the plane – we had an early flight so needed several cups of coffee at the airport before handling the maze of checking in and security checks. As you can guess this plane coffee was pretty awful!

The next issue I had on vacation was the hotel coffee, it was a little too bitter for my taste buds, luckily they offered cappuccino for breakfast and had an impressive choice of juices and herbal tea. This is where my addiction to cold brew teas started.

Kentucky Coffee

For Jason’s Birthday in November, we went to JW Steakhouse for a meal, as we were finishing up our meal the television in the bar broke the news of the terror attack in Paris, we sat in the bar with a post dinner coffee watching the news unfold in complete shock.

Coffee on the go

The rest of November was a little blur for me, I was busy with work and trying to get organised for Christmas, as a result a lot of my time was spent at home in front of a computer screen, but I did try and pop out daily to the local coffee shop for a coffee to go. I tended to use my Las Vegas takeout cup and dreamed about a holiday to Sin City.

Coffee with Friends

One of the best things about the run up to Christmas was getting to catch up with friends and family, as I mentioned before I used these days as a time to avoid using my phone, as a result I missed a few photo opportunities, however I did manage to take this one photo, after brunch with Kate and Ling.

Coffee & Star Wars

The past December was all about Star Wars, the build up to the release of The Force Awakens was epic, every shop seemed to be selling some form of Star Wars merchendise from pens to pajamas, I picked up these biscuits mainly for the tin, but they were perfect for an afternoon pick me up.

Pre-Movie Coffee

Finally on the big day! We had tickets for the midnight showing at our local cinema so turned it into a little midweek date night. After dinner, I was a little concerned about staying awake so late (3 am on a school night), so had a pre movie coffee.

Five Fandom Friday

Favorite Fictional Foods

  1. Three Course Dinner Chewing Gum (Charlie & The Chocolate Factory)
If I were to be let loose in a chocolate factory, I am not sure where I would start, but I do love the idea of different flavours of chewing gum – no one likes it when your gum loses its flavour, but replacing it with another flavour, that would be amazing.
  2. Apollo Bar (Lost and Once Upon a Time)
These chocolate bars seem to show up in several television shows, dark chocolate with filled with nuts – they seem to be the chocolate bars that adventurers carry with them when traveling to magical islands or other realms.
  3. Chocolate Frogs (Harry Potter)
There is so much food from the Harry Potter world I’d love to try, but honestly the idea of getting a magical card along with my chocolate was the clincher here – imagine collection Wizard cards!
  4. Slusho (Cloverfield)
The fictional japanese slush drink that has cameo appearances in all of J.J. Abrams work (and even showed up in an episode of Heroes), rumour has it drink even makes an appearance in The Force Awakens.
  5. Coffee from the Double R (Twin Peaks)
I know coffee isn’t  a fictional food. As a coffee addict, the idea of trying a “damn fine coffee,” had to make me add it to the list.
